The Apology puts ideology, justice, freedom and expression right at the very forefront in this brand new writing of an ancient tale. 399 BC, Athens is in a state of disrepair following the fallout from the Peloponnesian War and with the oligarchical Thirty Tyrants ousted from the city, a power vacuum has formed. Socrates, a renowned philosopher and self proclaimed ‘gadfly’ of the Athenians has been placed on trial. Standing before him; Meletus, Anytus and Lycon, the so called ‘accusers’ are charging Socrates with corrupting the youth, failing to recognise the existence of the Gods and creation of his own deities. Socrates, only armed with his rhetoric appears in front of a jury, ready to defend himself.
This brand new drama, focuses on Socrates’ relationship with his followers, including his young prodigy Plato, his connection with the Athenian people, desperate to find a scapegoat in troubled times and his contemplation of his eventual death and man’s spirituality. Told mostly through the means of physical theatre, the audience is placed directly in line with the same questions Socrates is faced with. Liberty, freedom of speech and justice loom over the trial. In a time of adversity in Athens, the same civilities we use everyday are put under the spotlight. The relevance to today’s society truly profound as we come to terms with how free we actually are in the 21st Century.
The show will be performing on the 19th-24th August at theSpace on North Bridge. The rehearsal period will commence between 12th-27th July with a view to putting on a preview performance in London
